Bloody lockdown made me miss my babies first photos!

This is not actually true there is no reason you need to miss these special first photos.

When the first national lockdown started on 23rd March, I had a diary filled with new parents expecting their tiny babies imminently. Some of my clients were happy to have their newborn photo shoot even though their baby had passed the 5-14 day old time frame given by most photographers, however I had always photographed babies older than this as it’s not always possible for new mum’s to be out and about so quickly after giving birth.

Some parents were a little sceptical that I would not be able to get the lovely photos they had dreamed of as their baby was going to be so much bigger! But what we need to remember is that a beautiful baby is just that at any time…

Amber is one of my clients who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on 26th April so just over a month into lockdown one. We discussed regularly when I hoped to get her into the studio which we thought would be much sooner than it eventually was as the lockdown kept being extended.

I had already taken Amber’s little boy’s newborn photo’s and his first birthday cake smash, so she was desperate to have her little girls captured to record all her little details at such a special time.

We finally got the news we had been waiting for and I was able to reopen my studio on 2nd July after being closed for over 3 months!

Amber was booked straight in, her little girl was now 10 weeks old. I laid my studio out for an older new-born choosing to have my single bed setup so I could have both siblings together knowing she would be too big for my tiny new-born props.

I included Amber’s son in lots of the photo’s keeping him involved so he didn’t get bored.

Amber was filled with happiness when she received her images and was able to instantly share them with family and friends that hadn’t been able to meet her little girl yet due to the restrictions.

Yes she would have loved to have had her little girls photos when she had her little boys but it was just not possible but she said ‘regardless of the age Mel managed to capture BEAUTIFUL photos of both my children’.

My baby led method of photography works great for both tiny newborns and older newborn babies. My relaxed approach allows me to structure my sessions, so I work with the babies, with no stress having to do certain poses.

Amber felt completely at ease during the shoot even when her little boy lost his focus, we sat him down and gave him his lunch, let him play then he came back to help me. He made his baby sister laugh which was so lovely as tiny new-borns are not smiling and goggling yet.

Please get in touch if you have had a baby during lockdown, it’s not too late to get lovely photos that you will cherish forever…
